Pengertian dan Fungsi Linking Verbs

Linking verb adalah kata kerja yang menghubungkan subject dengan informasi atau deskripsi tentang subject tersebut (subject complement — berupa noun, adjective, atau adverb). Berbeda dengan main verb yang dapat menunjukkan aksi/tindakan, kata ini hanya sebagai penghubung. Dengan demikian kata kerja ini selalu intransitive karena tidak ada direct object yang menerima aksi. 

Linking verbs terdiri dari: verb of sensation (feel, look, smell, sound, taste) dan verb of being (act, appear, be, become, continue, grow, prove, remain, seem, dan turn).

Linking Verb Be

Linking verbs be antara lain: is, am, are, was, were, dan be. Dengan is, am, dan are digunakan pada present tense, was dan were pada past tense, be pada present subjunctive & imperative, dan were pada past subjunctive.

Selain digunakan sebagai linking verb, “be” digunakan pula sebagai auxilliary verb. Bedanya, Auxiliary ”be” diikuti verb (participle).

Contoh Kalimat dengan Be:

·    The cat is funny. (linking verb, diikuti subject complement)

·    The man is sitting on the plane. (auxilliary, diikuti participle)

Action Verb & Linking Verbs

Kebanyakan verb of sensation maupun verb of being (kecuali be) dapat pula sebagai action dan transitive verb seperti: appear, feel, grow, look, prove, remain, smell, sound, taste, dan turn. Namun become dan seem benar-benar hanya dapat berfungsi sebagai linking verb. Begitu pula dengan “be” tidak bisa sebagai action verb karena “ising, areing, being” bukan sesuatu yang dapat dikerjakan.

Kebanyakan kata kerja pada suatu kalimat, tidak termasuk appear, dapat dideteksi sebagai action atau bukan dengan cara mensubstitusikan be pada kata kerja tersebut. Jika tampak logis, maka kata kerja tersebut berfungsi sebagai linking verb.

Contoh Action & Linking Verb:

The noodle tasted delicious.
Substitusi “was”: The noodle was delicious. (kalimat logis –> taste merupakan linking verb)

July tasted the Kung Pao chicken.
Substitusi “was”: July was the Kung Pao chicken. (kalimat tidak logis –> taste merupakan action & transitive)

Contoh Kalimat Linking verbs

Contoh kalimat linking verbs pada verb of sensation maupun being adalah sebagai berikut.

		After working for five hours, a plate of fried rice tasted yummy. (Setelah bekerja selama lima jam, sepiring nasi goreng terasa lezat.)
Verb of Being	be: is, am, are, was, were, be	Mr. Mamat is a headmaster. (Mr. Mamat seorang kepala sekolah.)
		I am from Bandar Lampung. (Saya dari Bandar Lampung.)
		The children were naughty. (Anak-anak tsb nakal.)
		I wish you be mature and responsible. (Saya harap kamu menjadi dewasa dan bertanggungjawab.)
	act, appear, become, continue, grow, prove, remain, seem, sit, stand, turn	The baby sitter was fired because she acted careless. (Pengasuh bayi itu dipecat karena berlaku ceroboh.)
		The newlywed couple appears happy. (Pasangan pengantin baru itu tampak bahagia.)
		He becomes unfamous because of his behavior. (Dia menjadi bereputasi buruk karena kelakuannya.)
		The story proved unreal. (Cerita tsb terbukti fiktif.)
		Your holiday plan seems interesting. (Rencana liburanmu tampak menarik.)
		Her face turns red when she is embarrassed. (Wajahnya memerah ketika dia malu.)

            

Linking Verbs

Linking verbs adalah verba penghubung yang menghubungkan subjek dengan complement (pelengkap) yang menerangkannya, bisa noun complement atau adjective complement. Sering digunakan untuk menggantikan to be dan dipakai untuk menunjukkan sesuatu yang berkaitan dengan panca indra (look, sound, smell, feel, taste) atau keadaan (appear, seem, become, grow, turn, prove, remain, keep, stay, go, run).

Linking verbs juga dikenal dengan istilah copulas atau copular verbs.

Contoh dalam kalimat:
- I feel happy.
- I keep health.
- The soup smells good.
- This food tastes delicious.
- She looks very beautiful.
- The music sounds slow.
- He becomes old.
- The traffic lights turned green and I pulled away.
- He became recognized as the leading authority on the subject.
- His face turned purple.
- She became older.
- The dogs ran wild.
- The milk has gone sour.
- The crowd grew ugly.


Linking verbs selalu intransitive (tetapi tidak semua intransitive verbs adalah linking verbs).

To be juga disebut linking verbs, seperti pada contoh berikut ini:
- The crew’s mission is to create the best topographic map of Earth.
- The solution was judges who would mete out longer prison sentences.
- Leonardo said, “I am the king of the world.”

Tetapi to be juga tidak selalu berperan sebagai linking verbs, contoh:
- Nyoko was crossing a bridge when the earthquake hit.
- Margaret Ann was feeling tired.
